Shark Fin Cove Shark Tooth Beach Milky Way Santa Cruz County Davenport California Fine Art Landscape Photography Mark Lilly

This was my first visit to Shark Fin Cove, which is located just off Highway 1 along the beautiful Santa Cruz County coastline a few miles south of the small town of Davenport, CA. August is known for the Perseid Meteor Shower and this year it coincided with a new moon, allowing for dark skies resulting in great meteor and star viewing. The core of the Perseid Meteor Shower can be seen to the north, while the part of the Milky Way I was interested in was moving over Shark Fin Cove to the South. I arrived at Shark Fin Cove, made the very short walk to a viewpoint, and began to set up my gear. The forecast called for clear skies; however, I could see some coastal fog beginning to form to the north. As darkness took hold of the area, hoards of folks began to show up on the beach below and as well as many other photographers all hoping to catch a glimpse of the meteor shower. After a few hours of waiting, the Milky Way made its way over the “Shark Fin” and the coastal fog had held off long enough for me to be able to capture the shot I had envisioned. I was even treated to a few renegade meteors from the Perseid Meteor Shower. All in all, another great night shooting the Milky Way along the beautiful California coastline.
